Dorset Phoenix came into being as a result of two friends chatting over a meal and a pint in a Poole pub. Mark Phillips was already a builder with many years experience in the trade and Paul Natolie was a businessman with years of experience in a number of successful ventures, who had always wanted to be a builder. As they talked it soon became obvious to both of them that the way forward was to bring together Paul’s business skills and Mark’s extensive experience of building to create an exciting new company to carry out top quality home improvements and other building work in Dorset and the surrounding areas. That’s exactly what they did and set up the works department on the Ferndown Industrial Estate and the head office in Blandford which makes it easy for the company to work anywhere in Dorset and beyond. Very early on Mark and Paul decided that the way to stand out from all the other builders around was to do more than simply work to the best standards. Not only would they be the best but they’d show they’re the best by undertaking to carry out checks every three months on all jobs for a year after completion of the work and correct any faults found, thereby offering Commitment Beyond Completion.

When Andy left Corfe Hills School a carpenter was what he wanted to be and he started work as an apprentice to learn the trade. A gifted young man, he soon completed his modern apprenticeship and is now an highly skilled and experienced carpenter and joiner. Andy is equally at home cutting a traditional roof, carrying out 1st and 2nd fix carpentry or creating a fine bookcase. |
Angela is married to Mark and she managed to continue her career in retail and administration whilst bringing up their family. Who better then to look after all the administration and accounts for Dorset Phoenix? |
Known to one and all as “T C”, Antony has worked in the building industry since leaving school, just like all the men in his family. He’s a man of many talents so he’s kept hard at work doing a bit of everything. As well as being the strong man of the team always on hand to help with the heavy jobs Antony’s the man for plastering, concreting and base works. He’s “Mr Adaptable” and always eager to help with any trade. |
Gary joined the company soon after its launch in the highly responsible role of Contracts Manager. Gary was just right for this position, not only because he’d previously worked with several of the founding team, but also because of his long experience of running his own company in the industry, demonstrating high standards in his work. Gary started his working life as an apprentice aircraft fitter with BAe then moved to the boat builders, Sunseekers for a time. A spell in oil rig maintenance followed, then a course in Artex work led him to become a plasterer and start his own business. Since joining Dorset Phoenix, Gary has studied for and gained a level 4 National Diploma in Management. |
Mark has worked in the construction industry for 34 years having started as an apprentice carpenter. He gained the C&G Craft Certificate, then the Advanced Craft Certificates, before successfully completing the HNC building course. In 1981 Mark became a self employed sub-contractor, mainly in the partitioning industry. By the late ‘80s he was moving more into general building where he expanded his knowledge and experience within the domestic and commercial areas acquiring new skills along the way. By now there’s not much Mark hasn’t tackled successfully from tap washers to major home improvement projects, such as total refurbishments and extensions. |
Paul had not long left Corfe Hills School when started work as a labourer on a building project not far from home. His natural talents led to swift progress into conservatory fitting with one of the specialist teams. A carpentry course at college was a natural progression for a keen young man. Since then he’s moved on to become Dorset Phoenix’s Contracts Co-ordinator, initially sorting out all the materials and labour requirements for many contracts. As the company became busier, Paul’s work has become concentrated more on the co-ordination of supply and purchasing of materials. |
Paul has had a lifelong ambition to be a builder. Life being what it is he started his career in Catering Administration and quickly became a relief manager for a major catering company in London before moving into sales. He developed a successful department exporting industrial equipment worldwide for another major company and then decided to apply the skills and knowledge he’d gained on his own behalf. This he did and set up JEC Industrial Equipment Ltd to do the same thing. Now his skills in business and management and Mark’s in building have come together to form Dorset Phoenix and Paul’s ambition has been fulfilled. |
Another old boy of Corfe Hills School, Scott attended Bournemouth College where he gained the National Diploma in Networking and ICT Support. Scott was initially employed in setting up networks for computer systems and expanded into establishing the servers and web shops. When Dorset Phoenix started up it was only natural that he should transfer his skills to the new company, where he very quickly became established as the Accounts Manager. |
Steve left school and went straight into his family’s engineering and manufacturing business. He gained his qualifications and then became a skilled coppersmith. That led to developing skills in metal work of all kinds before turning his attention to wood. In the early 2000s Steve moved into the building industry where he concentrated on plumbing and tiling. His wide engineering knowledge has proved invaluable in an increasingly technical industry, particularly as home energy efficiency has become ever more of an issue. |
Tony worked for many years alongside his Dad at bricklaying before joining his previous company and then moving on to Dorset Phoenix. A more hardworking manual worker you’d be hard pushed to find anywhere. Tony’s energy and his extensive experience includes a variety of tasks such as digging trenches, laying slabs, rendering roof tiling and even cutting a roof as well as building walls. He’s a much valued member of the team. |
